Job description

We are pleased to announce the 3rd major recruitment effort by CASIP after a successful 1st and 2nd round of effort in 2020 and 2021. Again, we invite applications for Assistant/Associate/Full Research Professor positions, with a possibility for distinguished professorship appointments. In view of the incoming international faculty members and postdocs from the first two rounds, we are now especially interested in attracting new members in the following areas: scientific revolutions, philosophy of biology, philosophy of neuroscience and cognitive science, and value theory. Salary will be internationally competitive (normal range from pretax 400k+RMB to 700k+RMB per annum). The compensation package also includes a generous starting research fund, a full coverage of the relocation cost, and a generous housing allowance for 3 years. The initial appointment is for three years. Responsibilities include a light teaching load (1 course per semester for a two-semester academic year), thesis supervision, research workshops and conference organization. The successful applicant must have a PhD in a discipline related to at least one of the AOS categories by the time of appointment, a solid research record appropriate for his or her career, and excellent communication skills.

The Institute of Philosophy in Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIP) was established to meet the urgent need in China to develop foundational, philosophical, and ethical research on science and technology. In the midst of rapid advances in science and technology, China needs to promote and invest in humanities that are relevant and fully international. As a full capacity international institution of research and postgraduate education in philosophy, CASIP emphasizes interdisciplinary research between philosophy and science. CASIP aims to foster collaborative research projects between philosophy and science and promote innovative projects of foundational research in basic sciences and on philosophical, social, and ethical issues in cutting- edge, interdisciplinary scientic research/areas. CASIP will be initially housed in the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). CASIP will eventually develop into a full-edged independent institute of philosophy in Chinese Academy of Sciences that covers all aspects of research and postgraduate education in the intersection between philosophy and science.

CASIP houses five centers: The Center for Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics, the Center for Philosophy of Physical Sciences, the Center for Philosophy of Biological Sciences, the Center for philosophy of Intelligence and Cognitive Science, the Center for Science and Values. Each center is headed by a leading expert in the area who direct teams of international researchers. The teams are in charge of research projects and train postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students.

CASIP is currently located together with many of the CAS institutions in the northwest areas of central Beijing, the Zhongguancun area (it is close to where such major universities as the Beijing University and Tsinghua University are located). UCAS is a major university in Chinese higher education. It has four campuses in Beijing area, three located within the city of Beijing and one in the suburb by the beautiful Yanqi lake.
